Flag Point Dinosaur Track Site

The Flag Point Track Site contains approximately 35 dinosaur footprints with an average length of about 18 inches. The prints are very clear and seem to be well preserved in the upper entrada layer. There is a striking pictograph of a print on the vertical rock face below the main track site. The red pictograph of the footprint is in the central part of a rock art panel. It is surrounded by figures on both sides facing the footprint with arms raised, as though worshiping the print. The pictograph is the oldest known recording of a dinosaur footprint in North America. The pictograph is thought to date from 900-1150 A.D.

Getting There

The Flag Point Track Site can be accessed by a 4x4 road starting at the Nephi Pasture Staging Area off Johnson Canyon Road, or by a roughly one mile hike starting off Seaman Canyon Road. The hike from Seaman Canyon Road is the preferred route if you are in good physical shape and can climb a roughly 30 foot vertical face with some moqui steps. I believe the climb is rated Class 4. I do not have a route for the climb.

The map below shows the drive from Johnson Canyon Road. The last several miles of the drive is through a densely treed forest and the road is quite narrow. An ATV or a short wheel base vehicle like a 2 door Jeep Wrangler is needed for the drive. I drove the route in a lifted FJ Cruiser and the car was heavily "pinstriped" by the tree branches.

Following the drive to the trailhead there is a short hike of about 1/4 mile. The start of the trail is about 100 feet due west of the parking area at the end of the road. The trail is well defined though I suspect it gets little usage. After photographing the tracks you should look for a trail below the rim that takes you to the pictographs. The pictographs are about 25 yards north of the tracks.
